Ministry

I have to draw your attention to my friend’s blog, where he highlights something Paul Tripp said about the hindrances to community in the American Church. I recommend reading the whole thing on Desiring God.

Paul Tripp talks about how he and his wife had accumulated a lot of “stuff” … nothing evil, just “stuff.” He says the following about this “stuff” … “All that stuff has to be maintained. It grabs your heart, it grabs your schedule, it grabs your time. It becomes a source of worry and concern and need to pay.”

This was a great reminder to me as I just moved into a big beautiful house last weekend. :)

Yesterday morning, my mind raced to this post by a former professor. I remember reading the portion of the article he posted a few months ago and feeling that same way. It’s quite interesting, as it speaks of life looking and feeling completely normal, unless you are watching or reading the news and constantly being reminded of our failing economy. I don’t have a TV, and I don’t read the paper; therefore, I easily forget what hard times our country is going through.

One month ago, I began my job at Grace to You (John MacArthur’s ministry) as a Customer Service Representative. I was so thankful for God’s provision, and I have loved every minute! It’s truly an amazing thing to work 8 hours a day with members from your church. :) But as I sat in a staff meeting yesterday morning … that’s when I remembered the article mentioned above. We were informed that Grace to You has been hit pretty hard by the economy over the last several months. A lot of time was taken to explain how due to the shortfall in giving, there are some changes taking place … and some cuts being made. These things are happening now as preventative action in order to keep the ministry running in the future. So, long story short … I lost my job (along with 2 others).  I went home, after only a few short hours, and did the only thing I could think to do … sit down with my Bible and journal.

I wrote down my thoughts and prayed, expressing my confusions and uncertainties to the Lord. I did not understand why this was happening, but at the same time I had peace. I knew that my God was on His throne, in complete control. I knew that His actions were in line with His love for me and goodness toward me. I knew that He had a reason to take a job away from me that He’d just given me and that I really loved. And I knew that He sovereignly orchestrated for me to now be able to attend the Truth and Life Conference last night and today … on the topic of “Suffering.” :)

What does this mean now? Great question to which I wish I had the answer. But thankfully I know the One who does know the answers, and I can learn, once again, to walk by faith and dependence on Him. My gut reaction was to move back to Sacramento, but I was quickly reminded by the girls at work that I needed to pray about that and seek the Lord’s will. I have already been offered a free place to live here until I find another job – make that two actually. :) I just wonder what the Lord has in store. Is He pushing me to go to Italy sooner than I was planning (like now)? Maybe, and  I will be writing more about the possibilities of that in another post. Does He want me to pursue a masters degree? Does He want me to move home to Sac? I just don’t know right now. But I do know that He will be faithful to guide me each step of the way.

I read this passage yesterday … truths which comfort and challenge my soul ….

“Then Job answered the LORD and said: ‘I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of yours can be withheld from You. You asked, ‘Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?’ Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. Listen, please, and let me speak; You said, ‘I will question you, and you shall answer Me.’ I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You. Therefore I abhor myself and repent in dust and ashes.’ ” – Job 42:1-6

With starting a new job, the holidays and being home for a week and a half, I have not blogged much (but I have several things in mind). Here are a few pics from our Italian Fellowship Group Christmas party. We enjoyed a Sunday afternoon together at the home of the Spitale family with wonderful food (of course, they’re Italian!), friends, and fellowship. I really enjoyed this time together and just being able to spend time talking with some people I have not had a chance to talk with much. It was really an encouraging time.

So there's actually only one Italian in the group, Maria (far left). But the other two are married to Italians.

So there's actually only one Italian in the group, Maria (far left), but the other two are married to Italians ... and I'm just a wanna-be italiana.

)

Naomi & Hannah - She's the sweetest thing ... and she loves me! The love is definitely mutual. :)

Paul, Bridget, and Rebecca - I love this little girl too. It's a blessing to see the Lord's work in her little heart.

Paul, Bridget, and "adopted" niece Rebecca - I love this girl too. It's a blessing to see the Lord's work in her little heart.

Well, there’s a glimpse into my Italian life. :) I will be posting more about Christmas and my time at home with my family and friends (it was wonderful!).

It has been so long since I’ve written anything I do not even know where to begin … maybe with an apology for not writing in so long? :)

My Trip Home

My trip home from Italy is quite humorous (well, now it is), so I must share it with you. I was scheduled to depart from Venice on Friday, December 14th around 2:30PM. My flight was to Frankfurt, Germany and then to San Francisco. I was to arrive in CA around 8PM Friday night. Well, when Frank took me to the airport around noon, we discovered that my flight was cancelled. Ok, great. Well, then we found out the reason why … there was a strike at the Venice airport. Ok, there is something about Italians and strikes … cuz I have been affected by them several times (let’s just say bus strikes really prohibit you when you have no car!). Frank found out there was like a pause in the strike between 6PM-9PM, so they re-scheduled my flight for 6 something. Frank left and I started my 6 hour hang out time in the airport. Well, then this lady sits down next to me and asks if I’m taking the bus to Verona (a city in Italy about 1½ hours west of Venice). I told her I was taking a flight to Frankfurt, and she said no we have to take a bus to Verona first and fly out from there. Well, this was news to me. I talked to the woman at the airlines counter, and she told me I was in the group flying out from Venice. Well, awhile later when the bus is going to Verona, a couple men at the airline counter tell me I need to go to Verona, because they do not know for sure when my flight will leave from Venice. If I go to Verona, I will for sure get to Frankfurt Friday night and leave for CA Saturday morning. They said they would put me up in a hotel. So the lady who first told me about the bus to Verona helped me get to the bus and get my luggage on. She used to be a flight attendant for the airline we were flying on, and she told me she’d help me. She was seriously the greatest blessing from the Lord! She helped me get checked in when we got to Verona, and we ended up sitting next to each other on the plane. Then when we got to Frankfurt, she helped me find the airline counter so I could get my hotel situation taken care of. Praise God for this woman, because I would have been so lost without her! So, I spent the night in Germany, and I can testify that Italy for sure has better food than Germany. :) Saturday morning I headed out to CA and arrived around noon. So, that’s my story … it was another adventure for sure. :)

Venice, Italy

I am not returning to Italy, as planned. I sent out my newsletter about that a couple weeks ago. If you did not read that, I’m attempting to include a link to download the pdf … ok, attempt failed. So let me know if you’d like me to email it to you. I don’t believe the Lord wants me in Italy at this time, so I am back home in Sacramento (which for any Italians reading this it is a city, not a sacrament :) ). I love Italy and still desire to be involved in ministry there at some point. I am praying for the Lord’s direction.

Starbucks

Since I am home for awhile, I need a job. I was recently hired at Starbucks, and I begin training Tuesday. I’m excited, because I’ve seriously always wanted to work at Starbucks. :) I’m also looking for something else, because I’m not going to get enough hours at Starbucks. I’m hoping for some babysitting/nanny jobs … but so far, there’s nothing in that department.

Church

I am back on the Youth Staff at church. Last weekend we went on Winter Retreat, and that deserves it’s own post and pictures. :) I am starting to disciple one of the high school girls, and I’m really excited about that. I’m praying about other opportunities to serve and get involved at church.

Keep Blogging?

Well … I think that just about summarizes things … except one … my blog. I am planning to keep my blog. I am going to post some more on Italy, since I did not post any pictures or anything from my last couple weeks there, and I would like to do that. I will post about random things I’m doing, Youth Group and church ministry, what the Lord is teaching me, and anything that comes up in regards to Italy. I appreciate all of you who came along on the ride with me to Venice, and I will keep you posted!

In 4 hours, I’m getting on a plane and coming home. And the amazing thing is, since I gain 9 hours, I will be home tonight. I’m coming home due to the situation with my visa. I need to finish getting ready to leave, so this is going to be brief. I will give an update as soon as I have a chance. Unfortunately, it might be several days, because on Tuesday I’m getting my wisdom teeth pulled. If I am not able to post again before Christmas – Buon Natale – Merry Christmas! I am so excited to be home with my family for Christmas! God is sure good, and I count this as a blessing from Him!

I actually don’t have a lot more to share about Thanksgiving, but I do have quite a few pics. The Saturday following Thanksgiving, we had a Thanksgiving dinner for the youth. This was a blast! We played some games, ate food, shared what we are thankful for, and hung out and talked. I took lots of pictures this night, and the teens actually got into taking pictures, which was really funny.

Here we have Alex enjoying nice big slices of pumpkin pie and apple pie.

Then on Sunday night we had Thanksgiving at the Filipino Church … same thing there … give thanks and eat. :)  Here are some pictures from that night.

This is a family singing a song – it was so cute with their kids!

Here we have Hector and Frank.

The little boy in this pic is one of the quietest and most well-behaved kids I’ve ever seen. He usually just sits so quietly during the church service – I’m always amazed!

Last week I had not one, not two … but three Thanksgivings. Let’s just say by the second one, I was so ready to be done eating. J

The first Thanksgiving was Thursday night for the Italian Church. Kathy basically does the whole thing by herself, with some help here and there. I tried to be as much of a help to her as I could. Thursday I had my language classes, so I could only help her for a few hours in the morning, and then during the meal. Frank put me in charge of decorating the bulletin board, which was really interesting. He asked me if I was creative, and I was like, no not really. I enjoy making scrapbooks, but that’s about the extent of my creativity. And even then, I’m not very creative. So, last week began the project of the decorations…

My friend, Thomas, offered to help me, for which I was so thankful! You see, not only am I not creative, but I don’t have a printer to print things; nor do I have a Wal-Mart to run to in order to get supplies. This really made life interesting! How do you make decorations when you have no supplies and no creative genes in your body?? By the grace of God alone! J Thankfully, Thomas can print out things at his university for a pretty inexpensive price. So we found some Thanksgiving coloring pages online – yes that’s right, coloring pages. What else am I going to do when I can’t draw a turkey?? He printed out several things and he and another girl colored and painted them. I did have one creative thought amidst this – write out “thank you” in each language represented in our church or people who might be at the Thanksgiving dinners, which includes the following: Italian, English, Tagolog, French, Arabic, Spanish, Ukrainian, and German. I was pleased with the way those turned out. I also used pictures on my computer of typical fall, nature scenes and put verses on them. I needed to print these at Thomas’ university. At this point it’s Tuesday – two days before Thanksgiving and one day before we’re supposed to decorate. I went with Thomas to print the things, but I realized when I got on the bus that the pages had fallen out of my bag between the university and the bus. So after retracing all of our steps and missing a few buses and being really late to where I was supposed to be next … I had made no progress. So now I’m without a key part of the decorations and no place to print them. Thomas’ university was closed on Wednesday for a holiday, so what was I going to do. Thankfully, Thomas found a place we could print at near the church on Wednesday … or so we thought. We walked around trying to find some places, asking different stores if they made color copies … no success. Finally, someone tells us there is a Mailboxes Etc. nearby. After searching for it for awhile, we found it and were so excited! Well, then the guy had problems printing our things and it took forever and a year … but we finally had success!! We got the board decorated Wednesday night, with Kathy rewarding us with a piece of apple pie with ice cream when we were finished. J Frank was really pleased with the way the board turned out. Oh, and Lewis thanks, because we did reuse some of your leaves and pumpkins! J

So, why do I tell this long, ridiculous story … as a reminder that life in America is generally easier. If I were home doing these things, I would have had supplies easily accessible. I would have had several stores close to my house at which I could print things. I would have had a stapler that you can staple things right to the wall with (you know, the kind that opens up and goes flat?) instead of having to use push pins and try to cover them. It reminds me of a missionary story I heard once. A missionary in the Czech Republic tried to buy his wife a simple cake for her birthday. This project that would have taken maybe an hour in the States took an entire day for him. Those are the little (but seemingly big in the moment) frustrations of missionary life. J

The dinner went well that night. People seemed to really enjoy the food. There was a time of sharing where the mic was passed around to everyone and they all shared something for which they are thankful. Now, I was told that there was a time of sharing, but I thought it was like Sunday mornings where whoever wants to share something stands up and shares. Well, I didn’t catch on until the mic was a few people away from me that the mic was being passed down the table (apparently I was not paying very close attention). But I thought since I can’t share in Italian, I won’t be asked to … well that was a wrong assumption. I said in Italian that I don’t speak Italian, but Frank wasn’t satisfied with that. He said they could translate. So, I managed to mutter out something. For the next dinner, I was a little more prepared. J

I had invited a few people to come that night, but none of them did. Although, I later found out one of them came, saw the parking lot was full, and left. The other people I invited had other things going on. They were appreciative of my invitation, and I was thankful to at least have the opportunity to invite them. I continue to pray for opportunities build a relationship with them and to speak to these people about the Lord (as much as I can in Italian, anyways).

Here are a few pictures of the evening and the decorations. I will continue with another post about Thanksgiving at a later time, since this turned into a rather long story! J

I don’t know if you are aware, but the dollar is very low vs. the euro. It has been steadily declining since I got here. As you think of missionaries in Europe, I would ask you to please pray for them, because things are very expensive. The Lord has been so faithful to me as I have been blessed over and over again to see the way He provides.

If you’re interested you can click here to read an article from November 20th, and here to see one from September when I arrived here in regards to the dollar vs. the euro.

Ok, so here is the latest plan. Now, as the Lord keeps reminding me, His plan prevails, not mine. So this may very well change. But as of right now, this is what things look like.

As I stated in an earlier post, I am coming home December 14th. I will be applying for a student visa, and Lord willing, return to Italy at the end of January. Today I enrolled at another language school for February – July. Then, I will return home in August.

The Lord has been so gracious to provide the necessary finances to do this. I am trusting that He will continue to provide. I am now starting to look for a place to live and figure out what exactly would be the best living situation. I cannot return to the apartment that I am in now – someone else is moving in when I move out. Kathy has offered that I am always welcome to live with them. I would ask for you to pray for wisdom for this, because I’m not sure what to do. I will be going to language class in Venice 5 days a week, which makes my present commute quite long and tedious. But if I live in Venice, I’m far away from the Church and the people here that I’ve developed relationships with. Also, the price of rent is very high in Venice. So, pray that the Lord would guide me to the perfect place.

Lord willing, I will be in Southern CA around January 16-20. I hope those of you in SoCal will be around, because I can’t wait to see you!

Please remember to pray for the Thanksgiving dinners we are having – one Thursday night and one Saturday night. This is a great outreach opportunity. We are supposed to have around 65 people at the dinner Thursday, and from what I understand, a lot of them will be unbelievers. I have been able to invite a few people. I am pretty sure I have one or two guests coming Saturday, and possibly one Thursday night.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!! :) Enjoy spending time with your family and friends. And don’t forget to be thankful! We have so much to praise the Lord for – just read Ephesians 1-2!
